Presenting our partner countries

During the Christmas festival, the Catalan school presented our Comenius Partner Countries to our pupils' parents.
Each country was presented by children carrying the name of the country, their flag and some objects wich identify each country:

In Poland we can find bears in Przemysl's mountains...

Flowers are beautiful in Holland...

Latvia is where the first Christmas Tree was decorated...

Slovenia has plenty of mountains to practise skiing...

There are many wineyards in Portugal...

and... Catalonia did show its traditional costume to the rest of Europe.

A professional actress did a good performance of the Countries' show

Happy New year !

At Dr Ferrer school, in Catalonia, we displayed all the Christmas material in our Hall Comenius corner.

CHRISTMAS IN CATALONIA

On Christmas’ Day, family gathers to eat a big and good lunch.
For dessert, they eat a special nougat called “torró”.
At the end of the meal, all together do sing Carols and children say Poems to their parents.

One week after, they all make a party to celebrate New Years’ Eve.
At midnight, at the start of the New Year, everybody do eat 12 grapes, one at each stroke.
After that, they hug and kiss each other and they wish “Happy New year” to everybody.

The Three Wise Men

And…  the longest moment for children is on the 5th of January, when  parents and kids go to the street to meet the Three Wise Men ( the White one, the Brown one and the Black one )  who arrive loaded with thousand of presents
and a hundred of assistants.

It is said that Jesus was born in a manger. Some days later, three wise men gave him three presents: gold, myrrh and incense. So the nowadays tradition pretends to imitate that old one.
On the 6th of January, all children will find out at home lovely presents given by the Three Wise Men during the night. They usually leave the presents at the balconies or under the Christmas Tree.

Some days before, children had written their wishing list and gave it to the Wise Men’s Assistant.

The Three Wise Men give to the children all sort of toys: cars, balls, dolls, bikes, books…    Children have to behave very well during the whole year. If not, they will get sweet black coal instead.

But children always do behave, don’t you?

After the Wise Men’s Day, all children will come back to school having spent lovely holidays.

Two funny days

The Innocents’ Day

Three days after Christmas, kids and young people do make jokes to their families and friends.

The last day of the year is the Noses’ Man  “l’home dels nassos”.   That is a man who is said that he only goes to the streets on the 31th December.
People says that he has got as many noses as days are in the year.  Children do imagine a man with 365 noses in his face… But notice that on that day, there is only one day left.
Sometimes children don’t realize that this is just a joke !

CHRISTMAS TIME IN CATALONIA

In Catalonia, the Christmas celebrations start on December the 24th and end on January the 6th with the visit of the Three Wise Men.

Some days before Christmas, we prepare our houses by decorating a CHRISTMAS TREE and making a CRIB.

It is also the time to wake up the TIÓ, a special creature who lies on the floor under a blanket.

What is the TIÓ ?

The Tió is a simple LOG, a magic one, though. Sometimes we draw eyes and a mouth on it, and we cover it with a blanket.
In the very old days, the Tió was simply the log which burned in the fire, which gave us so wonderful goods as warmth and light.
Some days before Christmas, the children feed the Tió properly. He eats everything, though he loves oranges and apples. Also carrots and potatoes.
On Christmas Eve, or on Christmas Day, depending on the families, children HIT the Tió while singing a song. The Tió will give them some sweets and presents from under the blanket.

How does he work?

First, children and adults sing together while hitting the log.
Then, children go to a room, leaving the log alone to do his job.
When they come back, they remove the blanket and… surprise !  Sweets and presents for kids !
The pity is that the Tió only works once a year !

News from Doctor Ferrer school, Artés

After the meeting in Przemysl, our pupils and teachers were so excited that
we started doing some lively activities:
We did created our Comenius Corner, were we displayed all the materials we
got at the meeting.
In order to find a logo to identify the project in our school, we did
promote a competition among all the pupils.
And we also did ask to our pupils and parents to make a nice Christmas Card
to greet our European friends...
We all wish that our project got a big success!

Hello from Catalonia

This week we have been so lucky to meet our comenius friends in Przemysl, Poland. The meeting was a real succes. We met our colleages from Portugal, Holland, Slovenia, Latvia and Poland. We spent some wonderful time together.
We had the opportunity to visit the Polish school and meet its teachers and pupils. We also could discover the beautiful city and country during some trips we did.
We would like to thank the host school for its fantastic welcoming, as well as the Town Hall and the Carmelitan monastery for giving us the oportunity to learn a little more about the Polish history and culture. We also would like to thank Gosia, the Polish coordinator, for the wonderful job she did to make our stay an unforgettable experience.
We wish that our project was a fantastic way to discover each others identity and culture.

Best wishes,
Carlos and Paquita,
